If it is your dream to elope at a lighthouse in Maine, it may be easier for it become reality than you imagine. With its rocky shores, coastal cliffs and historical nautical landmarks Maine can be one of the most beautiful places to choose for your wedding day. Why spend thousands of dollars on a traditional wedding when you can choose a location that feels like both a destination and a venue all wrapped into one, for the fraction of the cost.
If you can picture exchanging vows on a coastal bluff beside a lighthouse that has guided ships safely home for generations, continue reading. Maine’s rugged coastline is filled with iconic lighthouses, hidden gems, and even private island stays that create an unforgettable backdrop for intimate weddings and adventurous elopements.
In this guide you will learn:
One of the most important things to understand when planning how to elope at a lighthouse in Maine is that every lighthouse operates differently. Some are part of the National Park Service, others are managed by the state of Maine, local conservation groups or private organizations. The process for obtaining permission or permits can vary greatly depending on the location.
Some lighthouse locations may require:
A great way to avoid some of these permits and systems at highly sought after locations is choosing shoulder seasons or non peak seasons for your Elopement. This also allows you more privacy with less tourists visiting at the same time.
For example, lighthouses located within Acadia National Park, such as Bass Harbor Head Light, often follow National Park Service regulations and may require permits depending on the size and nature of your ceremony. Other locations, like privately managed lighthouse properties, may simply require a reservation fee or direct coordination with the property manager.
Many lighthouse elopements in Maine are surprisingly accessible and affordable compared to traditional wedding venues. Smaller ceremonies with little setup often have fewer restrictions, making lighthouse locations ideal for couples wanting a meaningful experience without the stress of a large production. I personally love this choice for “just us elopements”. When there are no additional guests property managers tend to be a lot more flexible and make it easier to elope at Lighthouse in Maine.
Before choosing your location always research:
One of the most iconic lighthouses in Maine, Pemaquid Point offers dramatic rocky cliffs, crashing waves and panoramic ocean views that feel straight out of a coastal painting. This location is especially beautiful for sunrise ceremonies and intimate vow exchanges overlooking the Atlantic. The rocky area is also fairly accessible for guests and is not too slippery or steep.
One of the biggest draws of Pemaquid Point is that couples can actually stay overnight in the former keeper’s quarters during certain times of year. Imagine waking up to ocean waves, spending the evening under the stars and having your entire elopement experience centered around one historic coastal location.
The rocky shoreline here also creates endless opportunities for portraits that feel adventurous, cinematic and uniquely Maine. It is also a short distance drive from Booth Bay Harbor to continue the days adventures with more exploring or dinner plans to follow your ceremony.

Located within Acadia National Park, Bass Harbor Lighthouse is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the state. Perched on rugged cliffs surrounded by pine forest and ocean views, it offers a quintessential Downeast Maine atmosphere. It is a sought after elopement location for its jaw dropping views, making it a desired location to elope at a lighthouse in Maine.
This location is part of the National Park Service, ceremonies are more regulated here than at some other lighthouses. However, for couples dreaming of an Acadia elopement experience paired with a lighthouse backdrop, this place is hard to beat.
Sunsets are especially stunning, with golden light hitting the cliffs and waves below. Inside the park allows for a great centralized location for a day full of adventure before or after your ceremony.

Portland Head Light combines historic charm with accessibility. Located within Fort Williams Park, this lighthouse is ideal for couples who want a coastal Maine experience without venturing too far off the beaten path. It is close to Portland Maine and provides the perfect outdoorsy escape from the city for a short ceremony or a stop on your full day elopement adventure.
The surrounding park offers:
Because this is one of Maine’s most visited lighthouses, timing is important if you want privacy. Sunrise ceremonies are often the best option for a quieter and more intimate experience. It is also another location that is best during shoulder season months before the crowds start.

Owls Head Light is a quieter and often overlooked lighthouse location that offers a more peaceful atmosphere compared to some of Maine’s larger tourist destinations. Surrounded by spruce forest and ocean views, this spot feels deeply coastal and authentic. I think it is the perfect way to elope at a lighthouse in Maine. It is not too far from Rockland Maine. There are plenty of incredible places to explore after this lighthouse visit. It makes it an ideal Maine elopement destination.
It’s an incredible option for couples wanting a slower, more intimate elopement experience with fewer crowds. The views from the water are incredible. If you were interested in adding on a cruise you would have stunning views of the lighthouse in the distance.

For couples craving something more remote and adventurous West Quoddy Head Light in Lubec Maine may be the best location for you. Located at the easternmost point in the United States, its iconic red and white striped lighthouse stands out beautifully against the rugged coastal landscape.
This location is magical for couples who want a true Maine style elopement experience away from major tourist areas. It is very North in Maine and does require some more logistically planning to get there if your not local, though worth it for those up for the adventure.
** Generally does not require a permit for parties smaller then 10-15 people
One of the most unique parts of planning a lighthouse elopement in Maine is that some lighthouse properties can actually be rented overnight or reserved for private events. Renting adds to the whole experience and also allows you to enjoy the space in peace when other visitors inevitably leave for the day. Lighthouses that are private give you access to the whole place and island without other guests which is the ultimate experience.
Little River Lighthouse may be one of the most unforgettable lighthouse elopement experiences in Maine. Located on its own private island off the coast of Cutler, this restored lighthouse property allows couples to rent the entire island for an intimate stay.
Accessible only by boat, Little River Lighthouse offers:
For couples wanting an adventurous, deeply personal wedding day surrounded entirely by the ocean, this is one of Maine’s most unique options. Sleeping quarters are available to accommodate a few guests or you can enjoy it all to yourselves for a private getaway experience.
